Title: Estimation of Urban Pollution Level during EARLI09 Campaign using Real Time Aerosol Monitors,

Abstract: 

The continuous observation of-tropospheric phenomena along with the aerosols characterisation and air masses dynamics above areas influenced by industrial or traffic pollution, is necessary for both local pollution level evaluation and large-scale atmospheric phenomena studies. Global aerosol distribution is very inhomogeneous, both horizontally and vertically and therefore aerosols can have quite large effects in some regions of the Earth, whereas their influence is negligible in other regions. This paper presents recent studies of aerosol characteristics from measurements during EArlinet Reference LIDARs Intercomparison campaign 2009 - EARLI09, organised at the Institute for Tropospheric Physics, Leipzig, Germany, from May 4th to May 29th, 2009. Aerosol vertical distribution and ground concentration were monitored throughout the entire campaign using an aerodynamic particle sizer (APS) and a light detection and ranging (LIDAR) system. The results presented in this study are only in the period from 19th to 26th of May 2009. They revealed that the natural sources of pollution (long-distance transport, such as the Saharan dust) should be taken into account in addition to anthropogenic sources to assess the level of urban pollution.
